Deanery Newsletter Lent 2024

Archdiocese of Glasgow –Newsletter from The South Deanery – Issue No. 2 Lent 2024

The South Deanery wishes to continue to communicate its activities to all parishes and all parishioners. It will seek to do this in an effective way and to keep all up to date with what is happening across the Deanery.  We hope this will be helpful.

Following consultation from Pastoral Areas meetings a “Pathway to Change” paper was submitted to the Archdiocese from the Deanery Working Group. The process by which this document has been arrived at is through a series of meetings at parish, pastoral area, working group, Deanery and Deanery Council meetings.

The Pathways to Change document is a provisional and on-going consultation paper. The paper recognised the ongoing requirement for additional information and the need for further local consultation taking account of matters such as the quality of buildings, proximity to other churches, and other factors thought to be relevant in each specific case. These parishes have been asked for advice.

Pastoral Areas

Pastoral Areas are being recognised as an important structure of the Archdiocese, acting as forums for considering the future organisation of the Church. They are the local sources of advice on the future organisation of the Church in that area. Pastoral Areas will offer advice to the Deanery on matters of parish re-organisation where this is necessary. In order to promote evangelisation and greater efficiency in the use of available resources, the deanery working group will be meeting to consider the nature and purpose of pastoral areas, the possible realignment of parish boundaries and potential mergers.

Additional Criteria and Information

In addition, individual parishes have been asked to provide information including: Parishioner numbers, condition of buildings, planned projects, finances, geography, hall use etc.

Evangelisation

Parishioners from throughout the Archdiocese attended a half-day seminar on Evangelisation on 10th February. This meeting was well attended by members of the South Deanery who made a positive contribution to the discussion. A report will be distributed from the coordinators which can be used by our own Deanery South Evangelisation Group recently set up. The deanery evangelisation group will meet in order to develop this report, recognising and utilising the resources of laity and clergy within the deanery.

2022-2023 Deanery South Census Statistics

Of the 20 out of 21 parishes who completed returned census figures 17 of those parishes are showing growth from between 3% to 45%.

St Albert’

In December 2023 Archbishop Nolan issued a decree closing St. Albert's church as a place of worship from 17th May 2024. This decree is presently being contested by the parishioners of St. Albert's and hierarchical recourse has this month been proposed to the Holy See. The closure decision is now suspended until that recourse has been completed.
