AGAP
Dear Friends,

Despite the challenges facing us as we approach Christmas, the season cannot fail to offer us Hope.  Love it or hate it, many celebrate Christmas who do not otherwise engage with Christianity in any other way.  For believers, it is the time when the prophecies of the birth of the Christ come to fruition in a way that is unique to Christianity; as CS Lewis put it, this is rather like an artist entering his own painting.  At Christmas, God enters His Creation.  This mystery of the Incarnation also changes and challenges our relationship with the Arts.   If the Arts are about exploring what it means to be human (in all of our light and darkness) then Christians surely must take a different approach to this field when the substance of what it is to be human was assumed and glorified by the Creator Himself.

This newsletter comes just before Christmas - and we have the Online Premiere of AGAP Theatre's 2018 play, "Sign of Contradiction: The Christmas Story" on Monday 20th December at 6pm.  (The first of my 2-part dramatic treatment of the Life of Christ.)  However, there's also the exciting news of Lentfest 2022, taking place in the new year.  There are various ways to take part, which are detailed below or you can visit the website at www.agap.org.uk/lentfest.  It seems strange to mention Lent when we are in Advent and anticipating the Birth of Christ, but perhaps it shouldn't be.  After all, the gifts of the wise men point towards the path to the cross and the words of Christ before Pilate ring in our ears when He says: "I came into the world for this..."  The theme of Lentfest 2022 is "Always be ready to give a reason for the HOPE that is within you." (1 Peter 3:15) so, in that spirit of Hope, I wish you every blessing for Christmas and the New Year.

Join us on Monday, 20th December 2021 at 6.00pm for the Online Premiere of the AGAP Theatre Production, "Sign of Contradiction: The Christmas Story", written and directed by Stephen Callaghan.  Recorded live during performances in 2018, this never-before-seen footage revives the highly praised production.  "In a park in Glasgow, on a cold Christmas Eve night, a group of homeless people gather around an open fire to keep warm.  Finding an old Bible in a rubbish heap, they are considering whether to burn it for fuel when a stranger appears and begins to take them through the story of Christmas in a way that they have never heard it before.  The play will be broadcast via YouTube on Monday 20th December at 7pm and will be available to view on the AGAP YouTube Channel afterwards for a limited time. (Running time: 52 minutes)

LENTFEST 2022
Do you want to take part in Lentfest? Despite the unsettled times and the uncertainty surrounding gatherings, our theme for the forthcoming Lentfest 2022 is "Always be ready to give a reason for the HOPE that is within you." (1 Peter 3:15). We want people to come up with something inspirational for our hybrid programme of live and virtual events. There's various opportunities: Songs and Words of Hope invites 5-min video performances; Images of Hope invites artists to exhibit; Schools for Hope invites schools submit a video of their creative response to the theme. Besides that, we are keen to hear from individuals and groups who want to bring a performance (live or online) to the programme and from anyone wishing to volunteer with us.  Full details, including deadlines on our website: http://www.agap.org.uk/lentfest
Reflecting on the theme, “Always be ready to give an answer for the HOPE that is within you.” (Peter 3:15), we are challenging Primary and Secondary Schools to come up with something inspirational for our Online Programme.  It could be a performance by the school band or choir, a visual artwork created by a group, a short film, a drama sketch, or a reading from a creative writing exercise.  It might involve the whole school or only one class.  It’s completely up to you!

However you choose to represent the theme, we ask you to upload a video (between 1 and 10 minutes long) using the form below.  By doing so, you give AGAP the right to broadcast this video via the Internet, including our social media channels, as part of Lentfest 2022.  Please include in the video, the name of the school and a short description of how you have approached the project.  If it is the work of another author, please also state any attributions that must be acknowledged.  It doesn’t need to be a work of video editing genius, it could be something filmed on a teacher’s smartphone and uploaded.  We just want to see our schools taking part in the festival.

The deadline for submissions is Wed 9th February 2022 (but the earlier the better!).  If you require this deadline to be extended in order for your school to take part, please let us know as soon as possible and we'll do our best to accommodate this.

Would you like to perform at Lentfest or bring an event to the festival?
We are seeking individuals and groups that would like to be part of our programme for Lentfest 2022.  The festival will run from 2nd March – 14th April 2022.  Due to the health advice, our programme will be a mixture of live and ‘virtual’ events.

Reflecting on the theme, “Always be ready to give an answer for the HOPE that is within you.” (Peter 3:15), we are challenging you to come up with something inspirational.  Whether you are a musician, a poet, a dancer or something else, there are various ways in which individual artists can take part.  You might also be an event organiser, a member of a band or group, or another type of organisation.  Lentfest is open to everyone.  Click HERE for more info or to apply.
Are you a visual artist?  You could be a painter, photographer, digital artist or sculptor.  Whatever media you work in, we are looking for contributions to our Annual Lentfest Art Exhibition.  Reflecting on the theme, “Always be ready to give an answer for the HOPE that is within you.” (Peter 3:15), we are challenging you to come up with something inspirational.  It should be an original work to which you own the copyright.  To take part, please complete the short application form and upload a photograph of the work for our festival guide when it is completed.  By doing so, you give AGAP permission to display the artwork publicly during Lentfest and to include photographs of this artwork in the virtual Online programme for the festival via the Internet, including our social media channels, as part of Lentfest 2022.  This exhibition is open to adults over 18 years of age.
